Her son, Anderson Cooper made this statement;

 “Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms. She was a painter, a writer and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend”.

“She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they’d tell you: She was the youngest person they knew — the coolest and most modern.”

Gloria Vanderbilt quote: On life

 “I have a tremendous appetite for life; the phone rings and your whole life could change.”

Already as a baby, Gloria was thrust into the spotlight when her railroad tycoon father passed away and a very public custody battle was fought over the heir to his fortune.

As a teen she tried keeping a low profile, but the media continued to follow. It didn’t help that she had a natural calling for fashion and the arts and started a career as a fashion model aged 15, appearing in Harper’s Bazaar.

Gloria Vanderbilt quote: On the importance of art

 “Art brings a message into a room. It should make us perceive in a new way—either through color, form or narrative content—something we had not perceived before. And perhaps reveal something to you about yourself”.

During the 1970’s, Gloria ventured into the fashion business. She started out licensing her name and paintings for a line of scarves, but in 1976 she made her mark after launching a line of designer women’s jeans carrying her signature embroidered back pocket and swan logo. These jeans were more tightly fitted than others on the market and were an instant hit.

Her unique use of embroidery has been a fashion inspiration for so many Wilcom users for over 40 years and will no-doubt continue to inspire future generations of textile designers.

In honor of her life, we look back at a few more of Gloria Vanderbilt’s greatest quotes:

Gloria Vanderbilt quote: On maintaining mystery in the age of social media

“I think less is probably more where Instagram is concerned. These days people seem to want to show every little thing about themselves, where is the fun in that? There is nothing wrong with a little mystery, is there?”

Gloria Vanderbilt quote: On Death

“Death is the price you paid
for being born.”

Rest in Peace
